Why Does Persistence Matter?

April 9th, 2009

Perhaps I should be concerned, as I’ve been compared to several different animals as symbols of persistence.   For example, earlier in my career, I won a service award largely related to my persistence, and the award was a solid glass bear  – why animals seem to be a symbol of persistence, I’m not sure.  Maybe we can learn something from them…  After all, my consulting mentor constantly says that we can learn something from dogs in that they do not have a bad self esteem after a failure (for example, not receiving the desired treat); instead they consider every opportunity to try again.  If you take a step back and think about that, it is quite interesting…..if we didn’t know / realize we had “failed”, would we try again, and end up far more successful?

Do Nice Guys Always Finish Last?

April 7th, 2009

Although it sometimes can be true with a short term perspective, I find that if you have a long term perspective, nice guys do NOT finish last!   Especially in today’s turbulent times, relationships are key – and if you are one of the nice guys, it will circle back around to you.  Have faith.  In the last few months, I’ve seen surrmounting evidence that nice guys are making a comeback – of course, the nice guy has to have substence as well as niceness, yet assuming both ingredients exist, be prepared for success.

Relationships – Why Do They Matter?

April 5th, 2009

Although it has always been true, it is being recognized more widely in today’s economic and turbulent enivornment that relationships are fundamental to personal and professional success.  Every person I know who has successfully interviewed or found another job has accomplished it largely through relationships.  Certainly, everyone who has maintained an overall positive and healthy attitude and perspective has accomplished it through relationships.  And, even those feeling despair have overcome the worst of circumstances through the power of relationships.  Value your relationships.  And, strangely, the world is becoming smaller and smaller through the use of social media and perhaps due to the economic challenges – within the last few months, I’ve been referred to or found people I knew ages ago through my relationship network.  Therefore, not only are relationships vital but they are longer-lasting and/or can pop up 20 years later – be selective and then nurture and value your selected relationships while keeping a friendly and positive approach with the rest.

How Does a Positive Attitude Turn Into Profit?

April 4th, 2009

Sounds strange, but a positive attitude can turn into profit!  If you think something good can happen and look for opportunities (instead of blame), it has a significantly greater chance of occuring.  Train your mind to see potential in situations instead of finding the worst.  You’ll be surprised how much more often positive results follow – and most likely you’ll be in a far more pleasant mood.  For example, I’ve seen customers frequent a particular company because of a positive and helpful approach of a Customer Service representative.  You can bet it turns into a more pleasant working environment – and profit!

Cash is King!

March 17th, 2009

As discussed in my recent newsletter, in today’s business environment, cash is king!   As basic as it sounds to ensure that there is enough cash available to cover projected cash outlays (with a cushion to cover risks), it is often overlooked or not prioritized – unlike a few years back when there might have been enough cash to cover whatever came up and less risk of late payments by customers etc, it is critical today.  Follow the cash & you’re likely to not only ensure you can focus on the business (instead of cash survival) but also find hidden opportunities to improve your business.  Whether business or personal cash flow, this principle holds true.
