Koalas, Kangaroos & Why Good Contacts Matter

When I was in Australia last month, I had a day and a half to tour the Melbourne area after my global strategy session and seeing my cousin.  Since it was my first time to this area and I don’t know if/when I’ll return, I figured it was a good idea to see whatever I could while there.  Luckily, I thought about the person who helped set up an Australia/ New Zealand trip for me previously when I traveled with friends and asked her for a recommendation since she did a great job with our multi-week adventure.  Because of her recommendation, I went on the only tour that actually sees koalas and kangaroos in the wild as well as many great sites on the rest of the tours.

 
 

If I hadn’t kept track of “good contacts”, I would have missed this.  Do you keep track of yours and nurture them?

One tip to implement this week:
Do you keep track of your contacts? Writing this note reminded me to thank my contact at American Express travel.  Realizing that I forgot her name, I looked it up in my contacts.  It seems like the place to start to keep track of them. No need to purchase expensive programs. I use Outlook and was able to find her quickly.

Keeping track is not enough though. When I contacted her to ask about my day in Melbourne, I referred back to when we worked together previously. She remembered me and gave me exactly what I needed with rapid response and no charge. Thus, reminding the person where you met previously and being easy to work with can help down-the-road. I had no clue I’d ever call her to ask for help, but I did.

Most importantly, go that extra mile to stay in touch. Why not tell your contact about an event you think might interest her? Or, simply give him a call around the holidays or send a quick ‘thank you’. While typing this note, my contact responded to my email and was thrilled I had a good time.

Take a few minutes out of your schedule this week and pick up the phone or drop a contact a note.



Amazon Is Going to Australia!

Amazon has announced plans to go to Australia in a big way — of course! This has many Australian retailers unnerved while simultaneously providing Amazon with a new beachhead for its global distribution network. And, it appears as though Amazon might have a supportive regulatory environment for testing deliveries via autonomous drones and road deliveries since there are vast remote areas for potential deliveries. It certainly seems like Amazon is a company to watch…

Amazon expands to Australia

I asked my Australian consulting colleagues about this announcement, and their response was “Bring it on!”. Retail prices have been higher for quite a while and so it should definitely stir the pot. According to the Wall Street Journal and a Citigroup Inc. analyst, Amazon’s sales could grow 8 fold medium-term in Australia — definitely not pocket change. Undoubtedly, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

What Should We Consider and/or What Impacts Could Arise?

As we have said repeatedly, we live in a global business environment and so we must stay abreast of trending factors. Amazon’s strategy to gain a beachhead in Australia is noteworthy. Additionally, their continued focus in looking for ways to test drones and other technologies keeps innovation as a priority. And, certainly not to be overlooked, their ability to create disruption remains alive.

Disruptions are becoming part of the new normal. The key is to be aware of potential disruptions and incorporate them into your strategic discussions. What happens if Amazon becomes a player in the UPS and Fed Ex world? Once drone deliveries are proven, how will that change the landscape?

And, from the other viewpoint, ask your team — what disruptions might you initiate? Push the envelope a bit and think outside of the box. In my experience, the only way to pursue this path successfully is to start by creating a culture of innovation in your company. Have you thought about how to do that?

 



Global Is “In”

profit through peopleOne of the reasons my global advisory board has been as valuable as its been is because it is global. We have people from the U.S., Australia and Japan with experiences from all around the world, and we are supported by a wider community with people from almost every continent. Looking through a U.S. lens might seem expansive to someone who has spent his/her lifetime in one state or on the east coast or the west coast yet it is narrow as compared to global impacts surrounding business on a daily basis.

No matter what you think in terms of politics and the like, it is imperative that you understand global impacts. For example, with the China struggles going on earlier this year, manufacturers should be on high alert for future quality issues. Have you been considering that? When I was in Australia for my strategy session, we discussed the impact of the strong U.S. dollar. Certainly it made my trip less expensive; however, it has far reaching impacts. Which countries should companies source from? Should they hedge? Should they in-source? There are vast numbers of questions to think about.

Within the last week, Europe has certainly had a strong impact on not only the stock markets but the global economy. What will Brexit mean? What decisions should companies be making now for impacts that will occur within the next 1-5 years? How should they mitigate risk?

The Olympics is another global topic. The Zika virus has certainly impacted attendance. How will companies protect their employees? Are athletes willing to take the risk? Money was poured into preparation for the Olypmic games. What will happen if it falls short?

It doesn’t matter what you think about globalization. It is all around us. The only question is whether you’ll be prepared and thinking ahead on how to best prepare and leverage for likely global impacts.
