Manufacturing & Supply Chain Expert, Lisa Anderson, Garners Executive Predictions for 2019: Opportunity Abounds

Resiliency & Innovation Go Hand-in-Hand

With the high level of volatility and disruption that is commonplace in today’s business environment, creating resiliency has become a must. What we’re seeing is that creating resiliency and an innovative culture go hand-in-hand. If we find a resilient team, they are also innovative, and if we find one that is fixed in nature, it is very unlikely to be resilient. Do you have an innovative culture?

Innovation is very misunderstood. It doesn’t require “new” in most cases.  It is rare to find something completely new unless you are in certain industries such as the pharmaceutical industry.  Even Apple didn’t create the original idea behind the iPod which has now been incorporated into the iPhone.  It actually came from the Sony Walkman (remember those?). At that time, no one knew they needed to walk around with music. We have come a long way, and Apple has made that easy!

Since the Innovation Awards at the Manufacturing Summit provide a good example of different areas of innovation, I thought it would be beneficial to list them below to spur thinking:

Take a quick look at the video as well which talks to the innovation awards.  Of course, these are just those recognized at the Manufacturing Summit currently (and we are always interested in feedback and ideas).  There are many more categories. Perhaps it will stimulate a few ideas though.

innovation for project successInnovation doesn’t have to be complicated and complex.  What unexpected successes have you had?  Can you find ideas in those?  I just returned from a global consulting strategy group meeting, and one of our members did exactly that to spur one of his companies forward from struggling with intense competition and no way to stand out from them to rapid and significantly more profitable growth.  I am confident that this same type of success can be found in almost every client. The Resilient Supply Chain: Video Interview on Global Competitiveness

To kick off our supply chain resiliency value series, we are excited to share an interview with Mirna Elnar, CEO Acura Spa Systems Inc.  Thanks to Mirna for sharing her expertise at the  APICS Inland Empire Executive Panel & Networking Symposium panel is Spring!   

Mirna is responding to a question related to supply chain resiliency.  In essence, the key question for manufacturers is how to be competitive with overseas manufacturers in low cost countries.  Clearly, we are NOT likely to be competitive on cost (especially labor cost) alone.  However, all is not lost!

In her comments, Mirna provides several ideas and strategies for how to navigate these rough waters successfully.  

                                                   

Success Responds to Resilience and Repetition
Our most successful clients build innovation into their daily routine.  It is no accident that they are the most resilient as conditions change.  In today’s Amazonian environment which is full of volatility and changing conditions, resiliency has become a “must”!

Mirna also gave a compelling story about exporting to Brazil.  Instead of giving up when she found out the tariffs were unfair, she devised a way to collaborate with a company in Brazil and find a win-win opportunity.  We walked away thinking if she could turn an unfair advantage into an opportunity, why aren’t we looking further for these innovative ideas?

 



Let’s Spur Innovation

Last month, I led a manufacturing roundtable on the topic of innovation.  Undoubtedly, if we want to be successful over the long-term, we must innovate. Problem solving only gets us back to our standard level of performance.  Although necessary, it will not be enough!  Instead, to exceed our customers’ expectations while enabling profitable growth in today’s Amazonian marketplace, innovation is a requirement.

Innovation is raising the bar to an entirely new level of performance.  It doesn’t require you to develop the next iPhone or 3M’s famous sticky pad.  In fact, the best innovators might not even think they are creative.  The great news is that everyone can innovate.  It doesn’t have to require significant investments.   What it does require is a culture that enables innovation.

An Innovation Culture
Here are a few “musts” when creating an innovation culture:

  1. Engage your people -You aren’t going to be successful innovating in isolation – at least not for long!  Involve your employees – view each employee as a valuable asset.  You never know what ideas can be unleashed if you have a culture of innovation that values each employee’s input and ideas.  Start here. Until your people are engaged, there is no point in going further.  How long do you think you’ll have happy, innovative customers with unhappy, not engaged employees?  NOT long.
  1. Engage your customers – One of our clients is creating an innovative culture.  They recently purchased a clay manufacturing company and are working to raise the bar.  The owners and executives value the input of their people and extend that to their trusted advisors, customers and suppliers.  I happened to be in Hawaii last month and my best friend wanted to see a pottery shop of an artist she really liked.  So I went along for the ride. When we arrived, I brought up my client because I thought the owner know of them. They were so excited.  They said they were a customer for life of Laguna Clay  (my customer) because they provided exceptional service.  They proceeded to provide input, ideas and much more. I took pictures and texted them back to my client. My client had engaged their customer in the innovative process.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Provide opportunities– Next, provide opportunities for innovation.  Do you provide a “safe zone” for your employees, partners and others to collaborate and innovate?  Most importantly, you’ll have to set aside time for them to focus on this priority.  Beyond time, provide your vision and get the process started by spurring idea generation and give them a few guidelines.
  1. Stick by your commitment –  Innovation will create failures which is why guidelines are helpful so the failures can be isolated within a reasonable tolerance.  There is something wrong if failures don’t occur. Thus, be prepared for them and celebrate the progress. Don’t be disappointed, or worse, beat up your people. That will mark the end of their innovation.

Creating an innovation culture is “the” key to innovation. Start there. End there.  We’ll talk through more of the details in the middle in future editions (or feel free to contact us to help you accelerate progress); however, this is the 80/20 of success.  It’s well worth raising the bar of performance.



U.S. #3 in Global Manufacturing Scorecard

According to a new Brookings Institution report, the United States ranks near the top for overall manufacturing environment.  The report evaluated policies and regulations, taxes, costs, workforce quality and infrastructure and innovation.  The only two countries to rank higher are the United Kingdom (#1) and Switzerland (#2).  The high tax rate and healthcare costs and the lack of government grants/ loans kept the U.S. out of the top spot.

The study also measured manufacturing output and manufacturing employment.  China ranked #1 in manufacturing output with the U.S. just behind in second place whereas Poland ranked #1 in manufacturing employment (with 20.2% of its workforce in manufacturing) vs. the U.S. at number 16 (with 10.5% respectively).  Manufacturing contributed $2.17 trillion to the U.S. economy or 12.1% GDP.

What Should We Consider and/or What Impacts Could Arise?
Manufacturing has been getting considerably more attention in the last few years. Yet, we still hear skeptics asking if there is any manufacturing left.  If we have the third best environment for manufacturing, why aren’t we leveraging this opportunity?

According to the report, there has been a resurgence of manufacturing in the U.S. the last few years. With a continued focus on innovation, education and workforce development, we can keep this trend going so long as it is supplemented with a focus on the appropriate technologies for our business (automation, artificial intelligence, big data), governance predictability and appropriate levels of infrastructure.
