As automation, e-commerce, and global supply chain shifts continue to reshape logistics, the future of warehouse development has become an increasingly important topic for businesses, communities, and policymakers alike. Lisa Anderson, President of LMA Consulting Group, was recently quoted in a Press-Enterprise article discussing the findings of the new Region in Crisis 2 report, which examines the continued growth of warehouse development across Southern California’s Inland Empire and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the region.

The report found that the region has added 55 million square feet of warehouse space since 2023, raising concerns about land use, housing availability, environmental impacts, and the future of logistics jobs as automation continues to expand.

Lisa offered a broader perspective on the industry’s role in the regional economy.

“Warehouses have put a lot of effort into being environmentally friendly. They’ve reduced their carbon footprint pretty dramatically over the last several years.”

She also emphasized the importance of logistics to Southern California’s economy.

“The whole logistics industry drives 40% of jobs in Southern California. The warehouses are one aspect. Without them, you won’t have the industry.”

While the report suggests automation may reduce some warehouse jobs over time, Lisa noted that technological advances are also creating opportunities for more highly skilled, higher-paying positions while helping the region remain globally competitive.

The discussion highlights the importance of balancing responsible development, environmental stewardship, housing needs, and the critical role logistics plays in supporting manufacturers, distributors, retailers, jobs, and resilient supply chains.
