How Manufacturing Leaders, Universities, & Professional Networks Create Lasting Value

Manufacturing success is built on more than products, processes, and technology. It is built on people. The strongest manufacturing organizations continuously learn from others, invest in talent, share ideas, and collaborate to solve challenges. These connections create opportunities to improve performance, develop future leaders, accelerate innovation, and strengthen the manufacturing community as a whole.

This philosophy was at the heart of the relationship between LMA Consulting Group and Kash Gokli, who led manufacturing initiatives at Harvey Mudd College and dedicated significant efforts to helping manufacturers improve performance through education, collaboration, and student engagement. Together, Lisa and Kash connected manufacturers, students, educators, and executives to drive operational improvements, strengthen professional networks, and develop the next generation of manufacturing leaders.

The Power of Professional Networks

Strong professional relationships often create opportunities that would never happen otherwise. When Kash relocated from Cincinnati to Southern California, he faced the challenge of building a new professional network from the ground up. Although he had extensive relationships throughout the Midwest manufacturing community, Southern California represented an entirely new business environment.

Shortly after arriving, he attended an APICS Inland Empire event, now known as ASCM (Association for Supply Chain Management), where he met Lisa Anderson. What began as a networking conversation evolved into a long-term professional relationship centered around manufacturing excellence, education, leadership, and business improvement. Over time, Kash was introduced to numerous manufacturing executives, business leaders, and industry professionals through Lisa’s extensive network and involvement in the manufacturing community. These relationships created opportunities for collaboration that benefited manufacturers throughout the region.

Bringing Manufacturing Leaders Together

One of the most valuable outcomes of strong professional networks is the ability to bring leaders together to solve common challenges.

Manufacturers frequently face similar issues involving:

  • Supply chain performance
  • Workforce development
  • Operational efficiency
  • Technology adoption
  • Capacity planning
  • Leadership development
  • Business growth

Recognizing the value of collaboration, Lisa and Kash worked together to support executive roundtables through Harvey Mudd College, LMA Consulting Group, and regional manufacturing organizations. These discussions brought together manufacturing executives from a variety of industries to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and share practical solutions. Unlike traditional presentations, the roundtables encouraged open dialogue among peers who were facing similar business challenges. The result was stronger relationships, better decision-making, and new ideas that participants could apply within their organizations.

Connecting Students with Real Manufacturing Challenges

One of Kash’s greatest passions has always been helping develop future manufacturing talent. Through his work at Harvey Mudd College, he led manufacturing-focused initiatives that connected students with real-world business challenges. Student teams worked directly with manufacturers on projects designed to improve operational performance, evaluate opportunities, and solve business problems. These projects exposed students to practical manufacturing issues while providing companies with fresh perspectives and analytical support.

The projects often addressed areas such as:

  • Operational performance
  • Process improvement
  • Supply chain effectiveness
  • Inventory management
  • Capacity utilization
  • Manufacturing efficiency
  • Technology opportunities

The experience created value for everyone involved. Students gained hands-on exposure to manufacturing environments, while companies benefited from innovative thinking and additional resources focused on improvement initiatives.

Manufacturing Improvement Through Collaboration

One of the themes that consistently emerged from these efforts was the power of collaboration. Manufacturers often face similar challenges but rarely have opportunities to openly discuss them with peers. By creating forums where executives, educators, and students could collaborate, Lisa and Kash helped organizations identify opportunities that may not have surfaced otherwise. The combination of practical business experience, academic insight, and peer collaboration often generated innovative ideas that improved operational performance and accelerated organizational learning.

Leadership That Strengthens the Manufacturing Community

Strong manufacturing communities do not happen by accident. They are built by leaders who connect people, share knowledge, and create opportunities for others. Organizations such as ASCM (formerly APICS) play an important role in fostering these relationships through professional development, networking events, educational programs, and executive discussions. Lisa has long been committed to supporting these efforts throughout Southern California. Through ASCM Inland Empire activities, Harvey Mudd collaborations, executive roundtables, and industry engagement, she has helped connect manufacturers, educators, students, and business leaders throughout the region.

These relationships create opportunities far beyond networking. They help manufacturers solve problems faster, develop future talent, share best practices, and strengthen the broader manufacturing ecosystem.

Investing in the Future of Manufacturing

The future of manufacturing depends on more than technology. It depends on leadership. It depends on education. It depends on workforce development. And it depends on strong relationships that connect ideas, talent, and opportunities. The collaboration between Kash Gokli, Harvey Mudd College, manufacturing executives, and LMA Consulting Group demonstrates how professional networks can create meaningful value for both individual companies and the manufacturing community as a whole.

By connecting students with manufacturers, facilitating executive collaboration, and supporting continuous improvement, these efforts helped strengthen operational performance, workforce development, and innovation throughout the region. At LMA Consulting Group, we believe that strong relationships, continuous learning, and industry collaboration are essential ingredients for building more innovative, resilient, and successful manufacturing organizations.
